Somerset Sounds - Artists

White NoiZe
White NoiZe formed in 2001

White NoiZe

Fingernail-cutting on stage, drinking from Barbie bottles, telling jokes, and obsessing about hair is all in a day's work for indie-mod band White NoiZe from Taunton.

White NoiZe

White NoiZe are Tom Toogood on vocals and rhythm guitar, Rob Willis on lead guitar, Martin Vickery on bass guitar, and Graham Bowley on drums.

Where in Somerset are you from?

Taunton

When did you form?

In 2001

How did you get together?

Rob, Martin and Graham were already together as a covers band. Tom saw an ad in the local press for a new singer/guitarist, and joined in 2001.

We continued to do covers for a while, then, as we progressed, we wrote more and more songs together, and individually.

We decided that our own music was more satisfying, and got us more of a response, when we played live, so in the summer of 2004, White NoiZe was officially formed.

How would you describe your music?

White NoiZe songs are infectiously catchy, with real-life lyrics, catchy guitar riffs and four-part harmonies to shake your soul - the sound just grows and grows!

How did the band gets its name?

White NoiZe
White NoiZe songs are infectiously catchy

We were struggling to think of a new name that represented us and what we stood for. Tom thought of White NoiZe while watching a documentary on early radio recordings.

A lot of bands use white noise in their live sets and on records. We thought it summed up our rock 'n' roll spirit.

There is no definition of white noise - it covers a spectrum of indescribable sounds, which is how we would sum up our music.

Who are your musical influences?

The usual indie suspects are heavily influential in Tom's songwriting. However as a band, The Jam, Paul Weller, The Kinks and Supergrass are our main influences and fall into the same genre.

What is your most memorable gig so far?

The Princess Royal on Saturday 14 May, 2005. It was a complete sell-out, capacity crowd.

We seemed to totally capture the audience's attention for our entire set - it was an amazing buzz.

Where would you most like to play?

We are currently trying to book gigs in Exeter and Bristol, so this is our main aim this year.

However, we would really love to play the new bands tent at Glastonbury, but then doesn't everybody!?

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself:

Rob cuts his fingernails on stage, Martin drinks from Barbie drinking bottles, Graham tells amazing jokes, and Tom has an obsession with his hair!

White NoiZe played at my 15th birthday party last year, it was a great success with White NoiZe playing some of their great songs as well as American Idiot and Love Machine accompanied by me and some of my mates singing along side them! My birthday was brilliant. Thanks White NoiZe. Good Luck for the future!!! xXx

Hopefully White NoiZe will achieve their ambitions and play the bigger music scenes of Exeter and Bristol. When they do I shall make sure I am there to witness it and cheer them on. They are a band I have followed from the outset and I previously followed Tom when he was a solo singer songwriter known as Snowfish. White NoiZe sound good and look good and will hopefully make a success of things, I wish them lots of luck.
