Sir Henry Irving

Born in Keinton Mandeville in 1838, Henry Irving was the first actor in British history to receive a knighthood. In performances of Hamlet (1874), Macbeth (1875) and Othello (1876), he gained the reputation as the greatest English actor of his time.

The legendary partnership between architect Edwin Lutyens and garden designer Gertrude Jekyll was rooted in the notion that a house and its garden should seem to grow out of the landscape. They designed the Formal Garden at Hestercombe Gardens.

Andrew Lincoln

Andrew Lincoln was born in 1973 in Bath. He made his first appearance in Drop the Dead Donkey and rose to fame in This Life playing Edgar "Egg" Cook before going on to star in Teachers. His film roles include appearances in Human Traffic and Love Actually.

John Locke

Seventeenth century philosopher John Locke was born in Wrington in 1634. Locke's notions of man's natural rights had an enormous influence on the development of political philosophy. His ideas formed the basis for the concepts used in American law and government, and allowed the colonists to justify revolution.

Dominic Masters

Frontman of new rock band The Others, Dominic Masters lived in Dulcote near Wells until he was four years old, before moving to Haybridge until he was 18. The band are renowned for their unannounced one-off guerrilla gigs, and for their libertarian, socially inclusive focus.

Don McCullin

Based in Somerset, Don McCullin is one of the world's leading photojournalists. He has documented the major conflicts of the second half of the last century including Cyprus, the Congo, Biafra, Vietnam, Cambodia and Iraq. Since 1991 he has concentrated on still life and is also known for his landscape photography of Somerset.

Paul Nicholls

Ditcheat-based horse trainer, Paul Nicholls is at the forefront of a younger breed of trainers challenging at the top of the National Hunt code. Nicholls' most successful horse to date has been See More Business, who claimed the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1999 and won the King George VI Chase twice. Nicholls has clocked up over 100 winners, with many of his big-race winners coming with talented Irish jockey Ruby Walsh in the saddle.

Sarah Parish

The Cutting It and Blackpool star was born in Yeovil in 1969. She's previously starred in Peak Practice and Hearts and Bones.

Portishead

Geoff Barrow, the founder of this trip hop band of the 90s, is originally from Weston-super-Mare. After teaming up with vocalist Beth Gibbons, who's from Keynsham, he named the band Portishead, after the town where he spent most of his teens.

James Purefoy

Actor James Purefoy was born in Taunton, and even worked as a porter at Yeovil District Hospital for a while. Film-wise, James Purefoy starred as the Black Prince in A Knight's Tale, opposite Heath Ledger, and co-starred with Milla Jovovich in the futuristic horror film Resident Evil.听He also played Rawdon Crawley in Vanity Fair (some of which was filmed in Bath) with Reese Witherspoon and Jim Broadbent.

Most recently, James has starred as Mark Antony in the big-budget 91热爆/HBO drama called Rome.
