Now that London has won the bid to hold the 2012 Olympics it can expect not only the prestige of hosting the largest sporting event in the world, but also a legacy of benefits that will remain long after the cheers have faded.
But is it always that straightforward? In a programme broadcast in May 2005 we return to Athens, where last year鈥檚 Games have left behind dramatic improvements to the capital鈥檚 infrastructure, but also a large collection of semi-redundant venues and an enormous burden of debt for the Greek people to shoulder.
