A minor revolution is going on in the isolated community of Siwa
The remote Egyptian oasis of Siwa, close to the Libyan border, is 700 kilometres away from Cairo, the capital.
It takes a good nine hours to drive there over increasingly rough terrain.
But there is now a minor revolution going on in this isolated community – and it’s all based on women’s traditional embroidery.
Laila Neamattalla an Egyptian jewellery maker set up a project getting local women to embroider fabric for the European haute couture market.
This has brought them much needed income and new opportunities. Sylvia Smith met Laila at the embroidery workshop in the oasis.
