Turkey turns toÌýits religious preachers to helpÌýmen understand how to treat women

This week the Turkish parliament has started debating new legislation to increase penalties for those committing honour killings. The abuse of women remains a major stumbling block to Turkey 's aspiration to joining the EU.

According to a recent Amnesty International report, honour killings remain a major problem along with domestic violence. But many women's groups say that new laws don't go far enough.Ìý Now the government is getting its message across to men through the mosques.

Dorian Jones reports from Istanbul onÌýhow theÌýsermons promoting equality and women's rights are being issued by the Diyanet, theÌýgovernment's religious affairs directorate.
