Who was really winning the battle of the sexes in Shakespeare's day?

Alexandra Gilbraith, who stars in two concurrent RSC productions: Kate in The Taming of the Shrew and Maria in its 'sequel' by Jacobean playwright John Fletcher, The Tamer Tamed. The two plays are being performed together for the first time since 1633.
Professor Lisa Jardine, Gordon McMullen and Alexandra Gilbraith join Sheila to discuss Shakespeare's attitude towards women.
'The Taming of the Shrew' runs until 8 November 2003 at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and 'The Tamer Tamed' runs until 8 November 2003 at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon.
