Kate Atkinson shot to fame when her first novel Behind the Scenes at the Museum beat Salman Rushdie and Roy Jenkins to win the 1995 Whitbread prize.
She's followed it up with two more best selling novels and a batch of short stories. Abandonment is her first stage play and it's currently showing at York's Theatre Royal.
It's about a woman, recently divorced and trying to forge a new life for herself, who realises that her house is imprinted with the memory of a former resident.
Kate Atkinson joins Jenni to talk about her journey into theatre. 'Abandonment' is on at the Theatre Royal, York until 26 April 2003
