In 1874, at the age of eight, Maude Delap arrived by boat on Valentia, a small island off the south west coast of Ireland.
Maude's family were all keen naturalists but Maude, who like all her sisters, had no formal education, went on to surprise them all.
She went on to become a prominent marine biologist and an expert on the jelly fish.
Naomi Delap is Maude's great great niece and she returned to the island of Valentia to find out more about her esteemed aunt.
A film entitled Come into the Garden Maude made by the artist Dorothy Cross is being shown at the National Theatre from Thursday 4 October until Saturday 20th October at 8pm (except Sunday). Admission is free.
