Eva Hoffman was born in Cracow in Poland in 1945, emigrating to Canada at the age of 13.
After completing a doctorate at Harvard University, she became a lecturer in literature and a journalist on the New York Times [before turning her hand to writing).
She has written three highly acclaimed books Lost in Translation: A Life in New Language; Exit into History: A Journey through the New Eastern Europe; and Shtetl: the History of a Small Town and an Extinguished World (this was entered for the 1997 Pulitzer Prize).
She talks to Jenni about her first novel exploring the intense relationship between a mother and daughter and the disturbing secret they share.
