A thousand years ago Britain had only a few hundred indigenous plants and many of the species we take for granted were as yet unknown.
The crocus arrived in the middle ages, the horse chestnut in the seventeenth century and wisteria was first sent from China to Britain in 1816.
Plant historian Maggie Campbell-Culver, author of The Origin of Plants, explains how some of our plants came to be introduced into Britain. The Origin of Plants (Headline, ISBN: 0-7472-7214-X, £25.00).
