Virginia and Vanessa Stephen were the sisters who grew up to become Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.
Although they tend to be associated with London neighbourhood Bloomsbury, the girls were raised in Kensington where they lived with their family in one large crowded house.
Jane Brown, author of Spirits of Place told Jennifer Chevalier how escaping to the Cornish coast, when she was a girl, affected Virginia Stephen for the rest of her life. Spirits of Place - Five Famous Lives in Their English Landscape (Viking, ISBN: 0670880000, £20.00).
