Annie Besant with Ghandi
With Indian independence celebrating its sixtieth anniversary this year, we will be discussing Annie Besant. British social reformer and campaigner for women’s rights, just one of Besant’s achievements was securing better working conditions for the impoverished matchstick workers in London. She also courted a love affair with India, settling there and participating in the country’s struggle for independence. Rukhsana Ahmad, author of the now touring play about Besant’s time in India, “Mistaken”, and Dr Mukulika Banarjee from University College London will join us to discuss this extraordinary woman.
