"The Marvelous Hairy Girls" 25 Sept 2009
Lavinia Fontana, Portrait of Antoinetta Gonzales, 1590s, Château Blois, France © Réunion des Musées Nationaux/Art Resource, NY.
The story of the Gonzalez sisters born in 16th century Europe.

The Gonzalez sisters were born in the sixteenth century with a rare genetic condition which meant they were covered in hair from head to foot. Their appearance was likened to that of a small terrier dog. Far from being shunned as freaks they were treasured by the upper echelons of Europe. The Gonzalez family are the first recorded cases of what’s now known as Ambras syndrome, and since then there have been fewer than fifty known cases worldwide.Ìý Merry Wiesner-Hanks, theÌýauthor of "The Marvelous Hairy Girls" joins Jenni to tell their story.

The Marvelous Hairy Girls by Merry Wiesner-HanksÌýis published by Yale University press ISBN 978 0300 12733 1
