Pauline Viardot was the Maria Callas of her day. Leading composers wrote especially for her, including Brahms, Berlioz and Saint-Saens. She performed throughout Europe in the nineteenth century and counted Georges Sand and Turgenev among her friends. She was also a composer herself.Ìý
