Tzipi Livni – will she be the next Prime Minister of Israel?
As a result of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s offer of resignation this summer, elections for the new leader of his Kadima Party take place in Israel on Wednesday. Favourite to win is the female foreign minister, Tzipi Livni. A former member of Mossad, in 2005 she followed her political mentor Ariel Sharon to set up the new centrist party of Kadima. If she wins, she could become the country’s second female Prime Minister after Golda Meir. How likely is she to be a break from the past? Lorna Fitzsimons, Head of the Britain-Israel Communications and Research Centre in London, and Israeli journalist, Michal O Dwyer join Jane to discuss. |
