Spencer's CookhamÌýfrom the eyes ofÌývolunteer Chrissy Rosenthal.
Listen to an extended interview with Spencer's daughter Unity.
Sir Stanley Spencer was one of the most original British painters of the 20th Century. The public often found his religious and erotic works difficult, prefering instead the quinitsentially English landscapes and portraits inspired by Cookham, the Berkshire village in which he was born. Now Stanley Spencer is undergoing somewhat of a revival. The Imperial War museum is restoring his Shipbuilding on the Clyde series and a Heritage Lottery grant means the Spencer Gallery in the old Chapel in Cookham is being modernised and reopened.
