There is an alternative says Clive Aslett, the Editor of Country Life. He suggests that the traditional dish which originates from Tudor days, which was banned by Oliver Cromwell - could simply be adapted to become a more popular dessert.
Alternative Christmas Pudding.
Use a large pudding basin fitted inside a steamer
Ingredients * 100gm unsalted butter * 250gm good quality mincemeat * 250gm Seville orange marmalade * 4 medium eggs * 150gm caster sugar * 200gm plain flour
Method Set up your steamer. Melt the butter and brush a thin coating onto the inside of the pudding basin. Mix the mincemeat and marmalade together, line the basin with a thin layer and refrigerate. Combine eggs and sugar in an electric mixer and whisk until it has trebled in volume and the mixture has turnedvery pale(at least 10 minutes). Fold in the flour and then the remaining melted butter. Pour into the basin, cover tightly with aluminium foil and tie it with string. Steam for 11脝2 hours and then allow to cool slightly before turning out onto serving dish. Garnish with a holly twig and flaming brandy.
