A CORDIAL ENTENTE There are possibly no two peoples that love to love and love to hate each other as much as the British and the French. The rivalries have produced wars, treaties and marriages. For all the unique rivalries, hundreds of thousands of British men and women live and go to retire in France while hundreds of thousands of French men and women go to live and work in Britain. Ask a British person what they love about France and they will say: the pace of life, the weather, the food and wine. Ask a French person what they love about Britain and they will say: the energy, the sense of humour, the friendliness. For this series of photographs, as often as I met disdain and contempt for their brethren on the other side of La Manche or the English Channel, I also met equal amounts of fondness and affection for two peoples who have much in common.
D-DAY NORMANDY Tens of thousands of British soldiers joined the allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. Many of them came ashore at Arromanche beach to liberate a friend and ally. For the second time in less than a century, thousands of young British men lost their lives on French soil. Today one can visit the Normandy beaches and countryside where the fighting saw bloodshed on a similar scale to the trench warfare of the first world war. For the thousands who lost their lives and would never return to Britain a headstone in one of the many war cemeteries represents the loss of a loved one someone's brother, father or son. Another category of men who chose not to return home were those who, having landed in France and survived the battles, fell in love and married a local Norman. These young men brought with them their Britishness, their love of a Sunday roast, Yorkshire puddings and lemon curd (which can now be purchased at the local March茅 U supermarket). With few words of French, they soon appreciated the French quality of life and were always able to tune in to the 91热爆 or follow the results of their local British football teams.
The History of the Entente-Cordiale.
The Entente-Cordiale was a colonial-era agreement that ended centuries of warring and hostility between France and Britain and paved the way for co-operation during two World Wars. It was signed by the British Foreign Secretary, Lord Lansdowne, and the French Ambassador, Paul Cambon, in London on 8 April 1904.
To commemorate this anniversary, the Today Programme has commissioned celebrated photographer, Nick Danziger, to travel to France and to capture contemporary images that signify the important relationship between the two nations.
In this series Nick captures the atmosphere of the Normandy landings with photos of the beaches, and he meets the soldiers who remained in France after falling in love. He also captures the glamour of the Moulin Rouge. His series will also encompass sporting, cultural andscientific links between the two nations.
