08:45 - New York A hijacked jet crashes into the north tower of New York's World Trade Center. It was American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 en route from Boston to Los Angeles. The plane was carrying 81 passengers, nine flight attendants and two pilots. At 10:29 the north tower collapses. Up to 50,000 people were working in both the towers at the time of the crash.

09:03 - New York
A second airliner crashes into World Trade Center about 18 minutes later - this time into the south tower. The flight was United Airlines 175, en route from Boston to Los Angeles with 65 people on board. The south tower collapses a little over an hour later, at 09:50.

09:40 - Washington DC
A hijacked plane crashes into the Pentagon near Washington shortly after New York is attacked. The aircraft was American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757 en route from Dulles Airport, Washington to Los Angeles carrying 58 passengers, four attendants and two pilots. The government building is the headquarters of the US military. About 10-20,000 people work there.

10:30 - Pittsburgh
Another hijacked plane crashes 80 miles (128 km) southeast of Pittsburgh, near the town of Shanksville in Pennsylvania. It is one and a half hours after the first attack. The plane was United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757 from Newark, New Jersey, bound for San Francisco. It had 38 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants. All those on board are killed.
