A new campaign is being launched by charity Common Ground called 'England in Particular'.
The public is being encouraged to send in stories and observations about their regions which will then be used to create an encyclopaedia of English life to be published in 2005.
The stories they want aren't so much the personal ones, but more the familiar events or characteristics of a certain region. For example in some parts of Norfolk they play a door-knocking game on Valentine's Day and in one part of Dorset on November 5 there's a street custom where they roll barrels of tar down the road.
In some cases these unique elements of English life may attract tourists, but often only the local community is aware of them.

Opening the back door to find that the local fisherman have left crabs in a bucket for us.

Speaking as an exiled Geordie, living in Northamptonshire (ie. the Midlands, not the South), the thing I look forward to most on going back up north is the great view of the river Tyne and the city skyline as you cross the over one of the bridges. There's nowt like it anywhere else!
