Amy Gehring, the supply teacher who was found not guilty of indecently assaulting her pupils has admitted she did have sex with at least one boy.
In an exclusive interview with the Today programme, Miss Gehring says she slept with one 16-year-old pupil and was too drunk to remember if she had sex with another younger boy.
The admission will fuel the row over supply teachers and whether the recruitment agencies which employ them are adequately regulated.
Although Miss Gehring was acquitted, it emerged after her trial that similar allegations had been made before that she had had sex with a pupil at an earlier school.
Child protection officers had recommended she should not work as a teacher again, yet their warning was ignored. Now, in an interview with Sarah Montague, Miss Gehring admits the earlier allegations were true - that she did have sex with a pupil, though - because at 16 he was over the age of consent - she was not prosecuted.
Miss Gehring also admits being so drunk on one occasion she could not remember if she had had sex with a 15-year-old boy.
She now says she is embarrassed and ashamed of her behaviour. But her admission will fuel anxiety about the case and the monitoring of supply teachers.
It proves early concerns about her were entirely justified. Yet though police, social services, her employer and even the education department were all alerted nobody stopped her going back into the classroom.
