On the day that Dylan turned 60, Today celebrated the great man's birthday with
two of his more famous fans.
Joe Strummer, the former singer of The Clash, and the legendary Stevie Wonder were both in London to be honoured at the Ivor Novello awards, where rumour had it Dylan would also be making an appearance.
After setting up in the Today studio, Joe began proceedings with a short acoustic burst of Blowing in the Wind which he had hastily rehearsed by playing along to a CD of the original in a spare 91热爆 studio.
In the late seventies the Clash were at the vanguard of the punk movement which some claimed wanted to sweep away older established performers like Dylan.
But Joe told Jim Naughtie that he had always been in awe of Dylan since hearing albums like Blonde on Blonde as a schoolboy in the sixties.
It was at this point that the discussion was joined by Stevie Wonder who was sitting in a radio car outside his hotel a couple of miles across town.
The Motown legend recorded his own version of Blowing in the Wind in the sixties and insisted it was released as a single despite record company objections.
Stevie said that he regarded Dylan as one of the all-time great lyricists along with Bob Marley and Smokey Robinson.
The interview ended with Joe and Stevie duetting on a very short reprise of Blowing in the Wind. Later Joe played the programme out with his version of another Dylan classic: Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues.
