Crimean stamp surprise

The latest set of commemorative stamps to be issued held a surprise for 76 year-old Harry Powell. One of them features his great grandfather on its face.

Sgt. William Phillips Powell, who was in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards,聽fought at the battles of聽Alma and Inkerman. 聽

He features on the 57p stamp pictured below. Sgt. Powell was spotted by Harry Powell's son, who recognised him from the photograph the family used to have in their house when he was a child.

However, the photograph disappeared when their house was bombed during the war.

Stamp featuring Sgt. Powell

Sgt. Powell's descendents kept up the military tradition. Harry's father fought in the聽First World War, and Harry Powell himself served in the RAF and fought in Thailand and Malaya.

The full set of stamps (pictured below) features six soldiers who fought in the Crimean War.
