23rd February 2004 The finale of聽Sex and the City. The U.S drama 'Sex and the City' has enjoyed cult status since it's first airing in 1998. Women across both sides of the Atlantic have closely followed the storylines and fashion trends. The show is set in Manhattan and follows the trials and tribulations of four career girls who lead busy and complicated lives. Each character juggles the everyday problems of relationships, trying friendships and the politics of the workplace. The show stars Carrie Bradshaw, a newspaper columnist played by Sarah Jessica Parker. However much of the action involves Kim Cattrall who plays man-eating P.R. executive Samantha Jones. Completing the quartet are Cynthia Nixon as lawyer Miranda, and Kristin Davis takes on the role of Charlotte the Upper East Side socialite. Many of the locations used in Sex and the City have subsequently become 'hip and trendy hangouts'. Followers of the programme visit the coffee shops and bars their heroines frequent. Unlike other popular U.S. programmes such as 'Friends' or 'Frasier' full frontal nudity and explicit language are common place. Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe has had a major impact on the fashion industry - both in a 'what to wear' and 'what not to wear' capacity. However it's not just silk knickers and fur coats that the programme's fan base identify with, the show has also dealt with serious issues like breast cancer, chlamydia, and pregnancy. The cult status the show has attracted can be seen in the聽vocabulary which has become everyday language to Sex and the City fans. Forget the yuppies and dinkies of the eighties, phrases such as; Toxic Bachelor (serial seducer), Modelizer (only date鈥檚 models) and Frenemies (friends who act more like enemies) can be heard in bars across the world. The final episode of the final series has now aired in the States, many of the show secrets have been revealed; Mr. Big鈥檚 real name,聽will Miranda聽make up with her mother-in-law and whether Charlotte is able to adopt. To the despair of many ardent fans the last episode will hit British screens in the next few weeks - this will bring an end to an era of what many women are calling the 'real girl power'.
