The varied habitat on Portland that plays host to many Mosses and Bryophytes.
The varied habitat on Portland that plays host to a number of Mosses and Bryophytes.

Too Good To Tread On

Lionel Kelleway heads the fringe of teh Dorest coastline in search of 'lower plants' like liverworts and mosses, motivated by the fact that nearly 70% of Europe's population of these tiny organisms are found in Britain.

We鈥檝e all no doubt heard of bird watchers, enthusiasts for butterflies, those passionate about wild flowers, fungus forays in autumn and the leaves of trees.听 But what about the tiny plants that grow on the barest of soils? Yes, they too have their dedicated followers and Lionel Kelleway catches up with one such amateur naturalist.

Committed to the monitoring of the lower plants on the fringes of the Dorset coast, Lionel鈥檚 guest in the Living World is a specialist liverwort and moss recordist with his beat stretching around the southerly island of Portland. Some of the plants are minuscule in the extreme, with Lionel spending much of his time eyes down peering through a hand lens, and in the process sees for real one of Britain鈥檚 rarest plants.

A rock looks very stark without its lower plants. So, join Lionel Kelleway for a safari of a kind amongst the boulder strewn Portland beauty.
