"The Living World is the next best thing to being there. Our contributors are skilled naturalists who are able to reveal those fascinating facts about animals and plants that you don't always find in books. It's like having a personal guided tour of the countryside, without needing to leave the house."

Lionel Kelleway is search of the rare Beefly on the Isle of Man. |
The World's Largest Slug
Presenter Lionel Kelleway begins the new five part series in search of a large slimy creature.听 Found only in one or two ancient wooded clefts in Dartmoor is the world鈥檚 largest ground slug, the 鈥淎sh-Black鈥 slug.
This leviathan is known to reach up to a length of 30 centimetres. It lurks under dead trees during the day, but at night slips obsequiously into the dark looking for vegetation of all kinds to eat.
These magnificent animals have the capacity to be a male, a female or both at the same time: they can even mate with themselves - which begs the question, why bother with a mate at all?
