The Living World - Bat Highway

This week in The Living World, Lionel Kelleway is in the right place at the right time and with the right person to witness a breathtaking wildlife spectacle.

On a narrow, tree lined path on the edge of Dartmoor he and local naturalist, John Walters, peer down into the dusky gloom and quietly wait. The path leads down to some old barns where a colony of greater horseshoe bats roost in the summer months.

John and Lionel are waiting for the moment when the bats will one by one begin to leave their roost to set out for their nightly hunt. Over a hundred bats roost in the barns and at dusk they use the little path as a motorway into the night.

John tells Lionel to keep very quiet and still as they pass inches from his face…
