Lionel Kelleway, Trevor Beebee and Paul Harmes delve into a ditch in Sussex in search of Britain's largest beetle, the Great Silver Water beetle.

Life in a Ditch
Lionel is joined by "bug hunter" Professor Trevor Beebee and Paul Harmes in search of what is reputed to be Britain's largest beetle, the Great Silver Water Beetle.
Trevor Beebee is Professor of Molecular Ecology of the University of Sussex
Paul Harmes is the Botanical Society of the British Isles County Recorder for East Sussex.
The trio journey to the Pevensey Levels in East Sussex; a large grazing marsh, home to many species of wetland bird, flowering plants, insects and aquatic beetles, including the Great Silver Water Beetle.
Great Silver Water Beetles are large and black and carry their own oxygen supply underwater; a large silver air bubble trapped beneath their body - hence the name.
These beetles are considered good swimmers, divers and even flyers. In contrast, the females are fairly prolific when it comes to producing young.
They can lay up to 50 eggs which she protects in a silver cocoon spun from silk.
Lionel and his fellow pond dippers uncoverÌýa fascinating story of Life in a Ditch as they go in search of the largest beetle of them all - the Great Silver Water Beetle.
