Spring Bumblebees
In the second of three programmes dedicated to theÌý91Èȱ¬ Spring Watch event, Lionel Kelleway is joined by bumblebee expert Mike Edwards and ÌýEdie JollieÌýfrom theÌýinvertebrate charity, Buglife.
Lionel accompanies them on a walk along a woodland edge in the Rewell Wood in Sussex to search for queen bumblebees that areÌýlooking for suitable nesting sites amongst the grassy tussocks.
Only the queens of last year's coloniesÌýsurvived the winter, and having mated before going into hibernation, they are now ready to lay eggs and raise the next generation.
Some bumblebees act like cuckoos - parasitising the nests of others, while some flies disguise themselves as bees to protect themselves against predators that will be wary of being stung.
The spring and summer months are when bunblebees are at their busiest collecting nectar and pollen from garden flowers.
Bumblebees, likeÌýhoney bees and solitary bees, also play an important role inÌýflower pollination.
