Portland Bill - Where the Wind Blows

A snout of limestone on the end of the isle of Portland, Portland Bill juts out into the English Channel.Ìý Its location makes it an ideal spot for birdwatching as Brett Westwood discovers in this week'sÌýLiving World.Ìý He joins Martin Cade,Ìýthe warden of Portland Bird Observatory, to explore this avian crossroads.

Offshore there are a variety of seabirds passing parallel to the coast and in the spring and autumn, the Bill is almost like a arrivals and departure lounge for the many migrants that choose this spot to head north and south from.Ìý The warden and his staff monitor the birds that pass through by putting up fine "mist" nets in the observatory gardens.Ìý Once caught the numbers and types of birds migrating through can be noted as well as the weight and size of the birds.Ìý Leg rings can also be put on or if the bird is already ringed, its existing ring number is taken.Ìý Then the birds are released.Ìý

Having seen and heard about the last few feathered travellers through Portland Bill at the tail-end of the year, Brett gets to join Martin on the trail of a well-travelled and rare migrant.
