What’s the Sun up to?
During the last week, giant solar flares have been exploding from the sun’s surface.
One of the largest ever recorded happened on Tuesday and a huge body of magnetised gas is now on its way to Earth. There’s a 50:50 chance it could cause severe power cuts and communications failures when it arrives.
Is Mad Cow Disease Reversible?
Findings published in the new edition of the journal Science suggest yes – in theory. John Collinge and Giovanna Mallucci of the Medical Research Council’s Prion Research Unit talk about their work with genetically engineered mice that suggests a new strategy for treating CJD and other spongiform brain diseases.
Fish Big Brother
A team of Australian marine biologists is deploying baited video cameras to survey the deeper waters around their coast line.
The aim is to survey fish biodiversity, population levels and behaviour but sometimes the work is rudely interrupted by large tiger sharks attempting to eat the cameras.
