Topics

Displacement of the gulf stream
Please could you explain the mechanism whereby the Gulf Stream might be switched at a particular point in time caused by Arctic melting. Where should we move to in order to enjoy a similar climate to today's here in the UK if this happens?

Artificial fragrances
Artificial fragrances are becoming increasingly difficult for chemically-sensitive people like myself to avoid, particularly through their use in washing and cleaning products. Could these insidious modern pollutants be adversely affecting invertebrate numbers and thus, perhaps, the wider terrestrial ecosphere?

Ban on stubble burning
I'm a farmer and we are ploughing ground at the moment. Has anyone calculated how much extra diesel is used countrywide since stubble burning has been banned? We think we use about four gallons per acre.

Treatment of West Nile Virus in Chicago
For the first time in 30 years, the city of Chicago is spraying insecticide (Anvil) over the city, ostensibly to kill the mosquitoes that spread West Nile Virus. To date, there have been over 200 cases of the virus in the city. Fifty of those cases have gone into hospital and three people have died. It is, of course, very sad that those people died and that others are ill, however, these statistics surely do not warrant the poisoning of the entire population?
