In the wake of food scares like BSE and foot and mouth, the consumer is perhaps more concerned than ever about where food comes from and how it is produced.Ìý
A research project funded by the Rural Economy and Land Use Programme is exploring the links in the food chain and the interactions between farming, biodiversity, landscape, producers and consumers.
Growing more wildflower mixes or native grass seeds can be of benefit to the look of the landscape as well as wildlife.Ìý
The current shift away fromÌýintensive farming means there are opportunities to explore how grazing different types of pasture canÌýaffect theÌýmeat or milk produced.
More food being produced locally helps to provide an income for producers and farmers and selling through village or community shops means that there is a social and economic need being met as well.Ìý
