The Wildwood
FridayÌý15 April
Dylan Winter spends a day in the Borders discovering how an ambitious project plans to return the Carrifran Valley back to its ancient roots of 6,000 years ago.
Carrifran Valley, Southern Uplands of Scotland.
In the Southern Uplands of Scotland, a vision is being realised.Ìý The Wildwood Group, an off-shoot of the Borders Forest Trust, have purchased an entire valley and are in the process of restoring it to a wildwood.
Thousands of years ago before man turned to agriculture, much of Britain would have been covered in forest.Ìý As settlements developed and man used the land for farming and grazing, the timber was used for building and fuel so the forest slowly disappeared.
Carrifran Valley is now free of sheep and the Wildwood Group have planted 200,000 trees in the last 5 years.Ìý It will take over a century for its steep slopes to once again become a forest.
Dylan Winter joins one of their volunteer treeplanting days to find out just how you get such a project into, and off the ground.
