The Hemp Revival
FridayÌý15 October
Hemp - cannabis withoutÌýÌýthe psychoactive ingredient - is undergoing something of a revival. It's a remarkable plant as Yvonne Ellis discovers.
As well as its traditional use in ropes, paper and clothes it is now being used in glues, resins, the interior of car door panels and as composites in jet engines! Yvonne Ellis hears from Hemcore, the U.K.'s main processors of hemp and meets Cliff Spencer of Springdale Crop Synergies near Driffield in Yorkshire, who as well as hemp, is growing a variety of non-food crops which could provide new sources of income for farmers, better products which are bio-degradable and even an alternative to fossil fuels. His ideas have the support of the newly formed Government-backed National Non-Food Crops Centre based in York.
