| | | | PLACEBO EFFECT:
Controlled trials have shown that a simple sugar pill, or placebo, can sometimes be just as effective in relieving symptoms as genuine medication - just as long as the patient believes the pill they're swallowing contains the drug in question. But the mystery remains - how exactly does the mind effect the cure?
Claudia Hammond explores the history of the placebo effect when she talks to Robert Van Hasslen, Deputy Director of Research at the Royal London 91Èȱ¬opathic Hospital, Professor Bill Bynum from the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine and Julia Waite, a former nurse.
Dr Raj Persaud talks to , an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Bath and author of a new book ‘Placebo – The Belief Effect’ about his theory as to the circumstances in which the placebo effect works.
FALSE HOPE SYNDROME:
Can people really change? Raj Persaud debates why some people make the same resolution five years in succession before they either succeed or give up, when he talks to Peter Herman, Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto and Dr Dina Glouberman, founder of ‘Image-work’.
FLASHBULB MEMORY:
How does the brain process emotional experiences, dramatic encounters and memories? Raj Persaud talks to Dr Lia Kvavilashvili, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire who has been researching a phenomenon known as Flashbulb Memory. Are our memories as accurate as we assume?
