The New Elizabethan Age
1953 was the year Queen Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey, Edmund Hilary and Sherpa Tensing reached the summit of Everest, England's cricketers won the Ashes for the first time in twenty years and Gordon Richards won the Derby. It was too the year that DNA was defined.

In Russia Stalin died and Malenkov took over although the real power would be assumed by Nikita Khrushchev. Churchill felt this was an opportunity to better East/West relations and wanted a summit meeting between Britain America and the USSR leaders. America was not so sure.
