The King and the Dominions
In Germany the Nazis had become the most powerful political party. The Allies were beginning to realise how dangerous it was to press reparations for the Great War on Germany. The reparations crippled industry, made it impossible for the Germans to pay their war debts most dangerously of all, and encouraged nationalism.
At home, the National Government was a Conservative government in all but name. High on the agenda was Free Trade versus Protectionism. Protectionism is the introduction of customs duties to protect British trade.
In America the new Governor of New York State, F D Roosevelt, planned to spend his way out of depression. He called his plan the New Deal. In 1932, the King made the first royal Chistmas broadcast.

The Times Leader 27th December 1932. "There can be no question that the King was most happily inspired when he resolved to broadcast his Christmas greetings to all his loyal subjects throughout the Empire. For them in their millions it was the event of Christmas Day or of Christmas night, or even by an imperial paradox in certain parts of Australasia of Boxing Day....to judge by the reports that have reached us, not many listeners in the King's vast auditorium were disappointed immense as the distances were....New Zealand apparently could have wished for a clearer transmission and in parts of India also the message was imperfectly heard...How intricate was the problem few of the King's hearers, accustomed to their daily allowance of wireless may have realized at the moment. "In retrospect, however, when we have been admitted into the secret, the marvel does not diminish. The youngest and friendliest of the sciences exerted all its resources and enabled the King to do what no king or emperor has ever done before and the Dominions over which he rules to make themselves vocal in a manner unparalleled . . . the present perfection now attained by wireless is a good omen; for it brings not only the Empire but also the whole world into closer union, breaking down many barriers, softening many appetites and removing many misunderstandings."
