The Irish Church and Constitutional Crisis
In 1868 the question of the disestablishment of the Anglican church in Ireland could no longer be avoided. Gladstone won the Catholics over by calling the Anglican Church a "hideous blot".
He won a majority of more than a hundred seats.
On 1st March 1869 Gladstone introduced his Bill in the Commons. It was passed on the second reading. The real battle came in the Lords. The Queen intervened. The Bill went through.
