The High Brown Fritillary
Helen Mark visits Exmoor in search of the High Brown Fritillary
75% of British butterfly species are in decline. It's a stark figure and in Exmoor one of the countries rarest species, the High Brown Fritillary, has one of its last strongholds. It's one of twenty designated butterfly survival zones in the UK which have been set up to encourage landscape scale conservation. Anja Borsja runs theÌý for Butterfly Conservation and by encouraging local landowners, the National Trust and enthusiastic volunteers to get involved she's seen some encouraging signs of life from one of the butterfly populations in sharpest decline. Special machinery is working alongside traditional grazing techniques, coppicing and even the almost as rare Exmoor Pony to recreate the habitats unique to this part of the world and essential for the High Brown.
