Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin ...
and view a gallery of Beatrix Potter images.
It's 101 years since Peter Rabbit first wriggled under the gate of Mr McGregor's garden, and into the hearts of children. The best selling blue coated bunny has never been out of print, and has heavily influenced and dominated children's publishing ever since.
The tale, with the twenty two others, made its author, Helen Beatrix Potter, a world-wide household name.

In The Tale of beatrix Potter, Libby Purves is our guide through the inspirations for Beatrix Potter and her stories. We visit South West London, her childhood neighbourhood, with James MacKay, of the 'Friends of Brompton Cemetary', who believes he has found the source for names of some of her characters.
Beatrix's biographer Judy Taylor, an avid collector of her letters, talks about Beatrix's early struggles in Victorian London, and her relief of finding a more vivid and earthy life in the Lake District.
Willow Taylor, who lived next to to Beatrix in Near Sawrey, reveals that the latterly 'Mrs Heelis', as Beatrix was known, was not necessarily the delicately dressed lady we often see in articles and text books.
With musical story telling from Vivian Leigh, interspersed with opinions and recollections, The Tale of Beatrix Potter offers a revealing insight into the world behind these much loved tales, on Thursday 10 October 2002, 11.30am-12.00pm
Producer: Tim Heffer
