Folk (Scots, English, Irish)
|
|

Intimate, friendly, pub/cabaret format which presents both big name performers and new/local acts. The mix of Scots, English, Irish (and American) singers reflects a warm egalitarian house style which is uninterested in nationalistic labelling. For example, Vin Garbutt and Dick Gaughan sing about people (not just English or Scots people) and they are influenced by music and issues that can't be confined within the borders of the countries they happen to have been born into. (Paul Matheson)
Long running Folk Club on Thursday nights that has had to switch venue constantly over 20 year period: Martin Carthy, Dick Gaughan, Karine Polwart, all have played at the "Star Club" or other names. Not to be confused with ceilidh dances in Riverside Club, Fox St on weekends. Used Riverside Club until 6 months ago.
New address on Thursdays 8pm St. Andrews in the Square, Saltmarket, Glasgow. Moved from previous venue. Now known as Live at the Star. See web page of same name.

Our music is suitable, with Kurdish dancing that we are doing at events and parties while most of the Scottish people enjoy it and in most events they wish to involve in it. I always sing with Nawroz, a Kurdish music band. (Mariwan)

I've been completely in love with this unique cultural expression for years now - the game/fight/dance is incredible and I love the energy and passion of the music. My main inspiration is Professor Pedro Gatuno of Groupo Senzala, who performs and teaches this music-driven martial art form from Brazil. (Graham Forbes)
