The perfect pop song, simple yet complex, with Morrissey's ambiguos charm as powerful as ever.

Pete Fenelon, York
The superior sixth-form poetry of the lyrics are neither here nor there; Marr's glistening, jangling guitar makes this immortal.

James O'Blivion
Everything that was right about '80s pop can be found in this song. Well, perhaps that's overstating it a bit...but all of it can be found within the discography of The Smiths. Johnny Marr's unique, and generally upbeat, guitars marry perfectly...almost inexplicably...with Morrissey's forlorn vocals, for the perfect explosion of joyous agony. These songs stand the test of time, and always will.

I must be the youngest Smiths fan. My art teacher recently told me about them and after researching them and listening to their music,I've been intriuged. I think the bass line in 'This Charming Man' makes the song. It's so upbeat and funky, I really like it.

Neil, lancashire, 21
This song wipes the floor with all the rubbish out today, but it is by no means The Smiths' best song. Most of their better work were found on b sides and albums. One of my favourites is Wonderful Woman, a song which was cruelly never put on one of the many "re-issue, repackage" compilations that record companies have cashed in on.

Curly, Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Not the best Smiths song- don't try to get me to say which one is...the list of possabilities is anything but a "shortlist" !- but what an introduction to the group. The tune is classic Smiths, lead as ever by Marr's jaunty guitar, the lyrics are inspired, the way that Morrissey paints a humerous picture of characters that you know and taps into emotions that are your own but in words you couldn't express yourself.....all contained in a "popsong" lasting only minutes! Love them or hate them, you CAN'T ignore them!!!!!

Calum McGilp, Kinnerley, Shropshire
So called music experts have deemed the eighties musical output as excrement. However, this song is an exception. Probably the best debut single by any band in popular music. Twenty - two years on and it's still irresistable in every sense. Morrissey is the Philip Larkin of Pop. P.S. I'm indebted to Curly for introducing me to the Smiths.

I first saw the Smiths perform this on a local news show and it made this spotty 15 year old who lived in a coastal town that they forgot to close own go out to the only partially trendy shop and buy the single. Only 20 years later did I find that I had been singing the wrong lyrics!

david allport/stoke
reminds me of being a miserable twat as a teenager but paradoxically has the opposite effect now.

dave , southport
awesome record - near perfect pop, the record that drags you into the smiths catalogue of fantastic music, lyrics and attitude.

Martin - Northampton
over 21 years ago when I first heard it I thought " my God what have you done". Brilliant

Ericka 28, Mexico City
The music of the Smiths is unique, I have heard them since I was 13 and not only "This charming man" is a good song. In my opinion all Smith麓s songs are really good. The Smiths must consider as an important icon of the brit groups.

Steve Buttercase, Cambridge
Sublime. One diamond from a cherished vault that holds many more. Heaven Knows I'm Missing Them Now...

Tommy Lincoln - Liverpool New York
As for "This Charming Man" having the best lyrics, it ranks high on my list, being introduced to the sounds of the smiths from a past girlfriend in high school, "This charming man" is in my top 5 Smith singles of all time.

Alessandro - Sao Paulo - Brazil
Simply the best pop group in the world.

alan - liverpool
no...every day is like sunday...poetry

Benni, Lincoln
This Charming Man is a great pop song. However, I don't think its The Smiths' finest moment. Give me These Things Take Time any day

Andy, Cirencester
The reason why grown men could now casually walk down the street with Kew Gardens hanging out of their back pocket!

John Liever, Salford
My hero.

Nick - Southampton
The Smiths were our voice and Morrisey was our god!

paul, dunfermline
many critics panned the smiths for being miserable, but with guitar like that, who doesn't smile a bit more when they hear it?

ken mitchell newcastle
perfect pop from a perfect group [not band]

Michael - Bedford
There are "better" Smiths songs, but this was the first visual experience I had of them - a video shown on 'The Tube'. I hadn't heard or seen anything like them, and was immediately hooked.

Peter, Pembrokeshire
Just try playing Marr's guitar part! 21 years on and it still never ceases to astound

Stephen, Liverpool
And oddly quirky yet timeless piece of pop which is lifted mightily above the ordinary by Johnny Marr's seamless rhythm guitar opening. Classic.

Nikki, 17
This is such a great song - I don't know why it came up on the chart a bit closer to the top! The Smiths at thier best, in my opinion.
