"Downtown" is simply for me the best pop song ever written. The lyrics are part wistful, part hopeful and completely sensible (unusual in a pop song!) and the music, voice and orchestration unmatchable. Petula Clark once and for all proved with this evergreen ballad that she is a National treasure and has been cruelly underrated and unrecognised by all by a few. Still working, she is simply the best British singer ever in this genre and this, her signature tune, shines still as a tribute to a fabulous career of, unbelieveably, 65 years. Isn't it time we had a huge 91热爆 tribute to this great artiste?

A song that sums up the sophisticated city nightlife experience. I love the raunchy B-52s version from their first album.

David Frankel, Richmond-upon-Thames
A perfectly crafted 3-minute pop masterpiece, fabulous production and a great vocal performance. A classic which still sounds fresh 40 years on.

Carmel Flahavan, Carlow, Ireland
Down Town always cheers me up. A great memory of my childhood.

Pete Fenelon, York
A crowning achievement of middle-of-the-road pop, with impeccable production and vocals.

Brian Wolverhampton
An all time English classic song sung by the all time great Petula Clark when you here her sing this song it just lifts your spirits immediately

Richard Miller- Southend
I was 11 when this song was first released and it evoked feelings of high anticipation, and promise of bright lights, bars, clubs, dancing in an as yet unexplored, exciting, grown up world. Even today the first few bars immediately bring these memories flooding back. An all time classic.

Believe it or not, Downtown is one of Stevie Wonder's all time favourite pop songs. Justifiable praise indeed.

Didier RIQUEBON from La Farl猫de (France)
Hi everybody, Whenever I can hear "Downtown" sung by Petula Clark (this song was adapted in French, and sung by Petula as well under the title "Dans le temps", all my childhood's memories come back. I was only 4 when this song became the blockbuster you all know in Britain and I was about 6 when I began to m霉emorize it in English and in French. It was my first "meeting" with an English song and an English female singer and it was most impressive because Petula was, and still is, so beautiful and congenial. I do really think that I began to like the English language thanks to her first and to my teachers then... If ever you could let Petula Clark in the knowing of my message, by

"When I came to America as a small boy from England in the early 1960s, I was very sad to leave my favorite singer behind. She soon joined me with her international smash, 'Downtown' in late '64 and America was suddenly a better place to be for a ten-year old boy learning how to be a good U.S. citizen."

the magic of this song is that it can apply to any city on any weekend ,serving as the perfect soundtrack to a good time 40years after it was written,it even turns up on modern dj compilations providing sophisticated respite in between more contemporary sounds

Robert Done, Wolverhampton
This is a song that I never get tired of. Right from the piano introduction. So perfect. When I first heard it I was probably only 8 or 9, and I can still recall the way the feel of the song evoked a night-time world of bright signs and cafe's bars and I'd never experienced them myself (way past my bedtime). The lift in the middle (a key change I think)really injects new energy and moves it up a gear. Some might say the big arrangement is too corny but in this case it's essential. One of the greatest pop songs ever written.

Gorgeous melody, one of those songs in a singular class! I love the way the "bridge" curls and soars elegantly before landly softly on the subdued "how can you lose"/"happy again" line to launch the refrain and chorus. Petula's voice was the ONLY one for it, a rare bit of luck in the music biz!

Katharine, Alfreton
For me, this song has never been the same since Andi Peters campaigned on C91热爆 to try and get it into the top 40!

Chris, Seattle
Petula's rich voice makes the song what it is, a true timeless classic. The big band sound flows around Petula's fading voice leaving the listener with thoughts of walking on a sidewalk in New York. Thank you Petula for listening to Tony's insistance/persistance to sing the song. You have brought alot of joy to people around the world with this song as well as to me.

Glenn, Mansfield
A wonderful, wonderful piece of pop ! Tony Hatch did an excellent job writing this classic !

Ramsey/NJ/USA
Petula is still the greatest and underrated!

Paul StanleyBournemouth
Fantastic song.Fantastic singer

John Keith Glasgow
Great song and still means a lot to the people of New York after the horror of sept 2001 and real classic which is often overlooked in this Country. Petula is Magic even at 71 she is still working - her recent 91热爆 radio 2 special of Sunset B proves she is still a mega star

Sandra from Peterborough
'Downtown' continues to be an influential anthem especially since 9/11.It changed the course of Petula's career, carving out a place for her in American pop which she still inhabits.A no.2 which should have been a no.1 in the UK.Still wonderful to listen to Petula singing it live and the audience doing the backing vocals.Petula is underplayed on Radio 2 and has a wonderful canon of hits which deserve more airtime. How fitting that she should be one of three women in the top 40.Tony Hatch is also a vastly underrated and underplayed composer.

Stuart Wilkinon - Perth
One song that truly lives up to its reputation of being a classic. 40 years onr its still being te-worked and played to a new generation as it did in the late 80's

John
Downtown is Petula and Petula is Downtown

john parkyn
downtown shows how a great song by a great stylise and singer never fads

Sly...London
The nearest thing to perfection: perfect vocals by Miss Clark, wonderful writing by Mr Hatch and an amazing orchestra. A song that has been with me yesterday, today and forever.

Sandra from Peterborough
Much more influential than it is given credit for and still thrilling audiences today when Petula sings it live.Became a 9/11 anthem.Classic 60s yet totally unique. And she sings it even better today!
