Is "A Day In The Life" up there with Beethoven's greatest works?

If Beethoven were alive, and not deaf, he would give up music entirely after listening to this. It is the musical equivalent of In Search of Lost Time or Vermeer's View of Delft.

Russell Heath Cowbridge
The greatest ever pop group at their greatest. The Beatles will simply never be matched in creativity, influence, diversity, and record sales.

Rich Roach, Niagara Falls
When music is taken to a higher plane, it challenges the ear to understand it. The Beatles did this many times, but in this song, due to the popularity of the Sgt. Pepper album, it happened to reflect the change in the hearts of youth across the world. It told the world that the Beatles were still the leaders of their generation.

Anna, Athens, Greece
This song has haunted me since I was 14. I never got over it.

Pete Fenelon, York
A glorious crash of a song, both halves are great; the combination is mind-blowing. George Martin never surpassed the soundscape he created on this track.

Sophie Dickinson, Dunbar
Amazing!!!!! Just incredibly, creative, magic took my breath away. send shivers up your spine!!!!!!

Mat, Sheffield
The Beatles you can love them or hate them. Some of their songs were dreadful, others fantastic. Some of their great songs might sound more lively, think 'Strawberry Fields', 'Eleanor Rigby', 'I Am the Walrus' etc. Of all the songs they ever did though i believe 'A Day in the Life', is one of the most poignent songs ever written. It's one of those songs of genius, it's success is in its simplicity. Pick up a newspaper and sing about it. Commenting on the tragic, the popular and the bizarre but amusing statistics on potholes. Add into this a seemingly completely unrelated contrasting section about a guy that's late for work. Blend the two together in a way that they smoothly flow from one to the other and back again. This is why this song works, it is an achievement, it's the masterpiece Eleanor Rigby minus the orchestra. This is why the Beatles will be remembered.

Nikki Erie, PA
This is my favourite beatles song. The great mixing of elements that dont seem to match well and making it sound like it all matches perfectly and seemlessly. Like it was written that way in the first place.

Ian Conboy Sheffield
The song has probably created as much discussion as any work, be it by Bach, Beethoven or the Beach Boys. It stands up there with the best and when listened to something new can always be heard. I will add that it is not the only song so do that but it always gives me a thrill to listen to it again.

Neil - Yardley Gobion
The Beatles at their peak of experimenting with sounds, word (imagery) and musical progression, no-one did it, or does it better.

Neil Richardson
As far from the disposable pop of today as you can get. Not so much of a song but more an event that generates excitement usually reserved for live performances.

mike, herts
If you think the beatles are "she loves you" then think again, one of most haunting songs ever from one of the best albums ever.

Carlos
What a perfect song! The final chord make you feel ALIVE....

Bob - New Jersey
Not just a song but an experience of the surrealist lifestyle. A supremely beautiful piece of work.

IAN STOCKHAM
This really is THE number 1. The greatest single acheievement in 'pop' music, just think from Yeah Yeah Yeah to this in only 4 years, astonishing!!

Calum McGilp, Kinnerley, Shropshire
In a sense this was a true collaberation between Lennon and McCartney. It's galling however that Lennon gets all the credit by the so called music experts. This song inspires all budding songwriters to pick up a newspaper now and again for inspiration!

John
Great track!!!! One of Lennons best.

Ally, Newdigate
Probably the most complete song The Beatles ever recorded, the greatest closing track on any album ever made

rob wallser plymouth
I wasn't around when this came out ,but I can only wonder at it's impact on pop music back in 1967. No one would have heard anything like this I'm sure ,but once they had ,nothing could be the same again.

Anthony Baker / Oxford
After excellence comes the appreciation if it, the 鈥淣ewspaper read 4000 holes in the road in Blackburn Lancashire, and the council had to count all of them for the purpose of the survey鈥. John simply wrote from a day in his life after reading the clipping in the newspaper. The other events were also simply drawn from life. The music was totally ground braking don鈥檛 forget we are talking of 1967 when everyone else was still writing Eurovision style songs. Jimmy Hendrix stopped recording just to listen to 鈥渢he new Beatles album 鈥淪ergeant Pepper鈥 it was their Masterpiece鈥 Just as Eric Morecambe once said about his style of comedy 鈥淚f you have to analyse it, it hasn鈥檛 worked鈥. As for the Beatles music, they were the Shakespeare of their time.

Martyn Blackburn
It's just a great song and the 4000holes bit just adds an extra depth for me it's just as good as in my life or Where did you sleep last night

Robert- Austin, TX
This song should be #1. This is the most innovative song ever recorded by a rock band.

urq - dallas
should be #1. this is not only a good song, but a fusion of so much brillinant musicianship...johnand paul are music icons

Wedgie, London
I cannot believe that this masterpiece did not make number one. Without a doubt the best song the Beatles ever wrote.
