showing his delight at cutting a quality single back in Memphis after years of recording mostly soundtrack filler. By 1969 he had been without a US number one for seven years, but together with his album From Elvis In Memphis, this marked a return to form as he finally updated his sound to reflect the changing musical landscape. 鈥淪uspicious Minds鈥 has a definite soul feel to it, with the Stax-like chorus alternating with the slow-burning verses in which Elvis pleads with his lover not to let distrust destroy their relationship. Then of course there鈥檚 the famous false ending, with Elvis waiting until the song has almost faded out before leaping back into action to bellow the chorus again and again. The track sparked a row between Elvis and his manager Colonel Parker when the song鈥檚 copyright owner refused to hand over a cut of the publishing royalties. Parker was determined to hold out for the cash, but Elvis鈥 love of the song ultimately won over The Colonel鈥檚 love of money.
