“Human rights work becoming increasingly lethal”
The Secretary General of Amnesty International Agnès Callamard has told HARDtalk’s Stephen Sackur that human rights work is becoming “more deadly”.
“This is a crisis of global leadership, this is a crisis in vision, this is a crisis in our common humanity.”
“There is an increase in authoritarian practices around the world. We see that reflected in the fact that human rights work is becoming increasingly lethal, deadly.
“But it does not mean that human rights work is irrelevant, quite the contrary. It means that governments, politicians, have understood that human rights is an obstacle for their mis-use, abuse of power and they are prepared to do everything to prevent it.”
