Barrie Rutter on Falstaff
Barrie Rutter, founder of Northern Broadsides theatre company, chooses the great comic character of Falstaff, from The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Falstaff appears in three of Shakespeare's plays. In the two Henry IV plays, he is a companion to Prince Hal, the future King Henry V. In The Merry Wives of Windsor, he is the buffoonish suitor of two married women.
The extract is from Northern Broadsides production of Merry Wives, which tours the UK in April and May 2016.
