People in Papua New Guinea can often seem intimidating, and there hadn’t been many smiles the previous night as the Ngala people ushered us to our accommodation in long wooden huts on stilts. We’d been told that the village had only recently stopped headhunting, and that they specialised in catching crocodiles with their bare hands, which all added to the tension.

But the next morning revealed an entirely different side to hunters Charles and Sakias. They showed Gordon how to chop up a coconut, and then let him try his hand at scaling a tree. One of the remarkable things about the men was their incredibly muscular physique – so for them, shinning up and down the tough bark was no problem. They quite enjoyed watching Gordon giving it his best shot – and after that, they became friendly, which made filming with them a pleasure.
