Playing with objectives and obstacles
Actors from Shared Experience work with director Polly Teale on the play 'Speechless' about two identical twins. We watch the physical experiment that happens in the rehearsal room. We see the actors try a series of different rehearsal techniques: using chairs, mirror work, synchronised movement, holding back emotion. The actors work without words to explore how what their characters want drives their movement. We see conflicting objectives in a scene in performance where one character wants to watch the TV programme Dallas and the other refuses. Other performance moments show the results of the rehearsal and the effect of tension between characters on their physical performance.
